Buy Coffee…Help a Small Village in Nicaragua!
Did you know you were helping a small poor community in Nicaragua when you buy coffee at the Village Square Coffee House?
We were able to meet up with our coffee growers this year in the North Mountains of Nicaragua. Las Chicas, who we buy coffee from directly, has a registered charity and we able to witness first hand the generous work that Maria and her team do. We started our day trip by visiting three schools, close to the Las Chicas Coffee Plantation, with donations for the community. The children and teachers were very appreciative. The children especially loved the new soccer balls. They had been used to their old deflated and ripped kickers. We were also happy to leave them with new volleyballs and nets, and skipping ropes.
" We are grateful to be in the position to add one more community to the beneficiaries of Los Frutos del Cafe’s charitable efforts. As we get to know this community and its needs, we hope to be able to bring much more in the coming years.”
- Maria Fiallos, Las Chicas del Cafe
The second day was spent visiting a rural medical clinic and maternity ward. The clinics have very little in the way of supplies and medicine. Los Frutos del Café was able to give a donation of over $1000 worth of supplies, purchased in Nicaragua, where our dollar has greater buying power. We also delivered many baby items to a maternity ward where young mothers are able to spend a few weeks waiting for the arrival of their babies.
The last hours of charity work were at the farm where Las Chicas grow their exceptional coffee. The workers and their families accepted items such as new rubber boots, soap, grains, cleaning supplies, etc. Everyone was so happy and appreciative. We were rewarded with a delicious traditional Nicaraguan lunch prepared by friends and family.
It was a very heartwarming experience for us to be a part of.
The Los Frutos Charity was founded after Hurricane Mitch. The history of the community of El Pegador and Los Frutos del Cafe goes all the way back to the aftermath of the storm. It was one of the first communities we helped, as it was badly affected and devastated by the mudslides. Most of the coffee growers in the region lost their entire plantations and homes. Los Frutos del Cafe contributes annually to the basic needs of the local elementary school as part of our effort to encourage education in this community. As well as our continuing pledge with ongoing environmental projects, we were happy to contribute school supplies, sports equipment, and for the first time ever, tricycles. They were a huge hit. It created a bit of a traffic jam on the school corridors!
"It is always wonderful to discover the many ways in which coffee can change and fuel the development of a community. One day I will stand on top of these mountains and scream ” coffee can change the world” because I think it can, in both big and small ways." - Maria Fiallos, co-owner Las Chicas del Cafe
Village Square Coffee House supports this charity by promoting and brewing Las Chicas Del Café exclusively.
